OID description

OID: (ASN.1 notation)
(dot notation)
(OID-IRI notation)
(In the OID-IRI notation, this OID is identified by long arc "UUID" from the root of the OID tree.)

Description:

Universally Unique IDentifiers (UUIDs) generated in accordance with Recommendation ITU-T X.667 | ISO/IEC 9834-8

Information:

UUIDs are octet strings of 16 octets (128 bits) which can be interpreted as an integer that can be used as a child OID of {joint-iso-itu-t uuid(25)} without formal registration (in particular in this OID repository). This enables users to generate OIDs without registering them with a registration authority. Note however that some software may not be able to handle large OID values.

See more information on UUIDs. UUIDs version 1, 3, 4 and 5 are allowed (see Table 3 of Rec. ITU-T X.667 | ISO/IEC 9834-8). UUID generators are available from ViaThinkSoft, uuidgenerator.creativeweb.online and uuidgenerator.net, UUIDtools.com, in particular.

It is important to note that identical UUID values might be used as child OIDs (without formal registration) although the probability of this occurring is very small. The probability is increased if UUIDs are generated from Message Digest 5 (MD5) hash values or pseudo-random numbers, rather than from SHA-1 hash values and cryptographic-quality random numbers.

This OID was allocated by clause 7 of Rec. ITU-T X.667 (2005) | ISO/IEC 9834-8:2005 "Procedures for the operation of OSI Registration Authorities - Generation and Registration of Universally Unique IDentifiers (UUIDs) and their Use as ASN.1 Object Identifier Components".

The hexadecimal notation of the UUID is used as Unicode label for child OIDs.

See also OID {iso(1) member-body(2) us(840) microsoft(113556) 1 8000 2554} for Microsoft customers to use in conjunction with Globally Unique IDentifier (GUID) generation schemes.
